Riverfest: Bat Walk at the Franciscan Gardens

23rd September 2025
Great Stour Riverfest 2025

Join the Franciscan Gardens for a bat walk in an 800-year-old garden and historic site.

Join us for a bat walk in an 800-year-old garden and historic site on Tuesday 23rd September 2025, 19:00 - 20:30

The Franciscan Gardens are a hidden and undisturbed haven in the heart of Canterbury, with a long and fascinating history that dates to 1224.The gardens have been planted with pollinators and other insects in mind, using organic principles and a wide variety of native wildflowers, making it a hotspot for biodiversity. The River Stour runs past ancient stonework which itself provides countless cracks and crannies for roosting.

Join us as we look for bats foraging for insects in the gardens and over the river, using bat detectors to listen for their ultrasonic calls. Insect activity is very weather dependent so there are no guarantees, but we hope to find at least two species of pipistrelle, as well as Daubenton’s bats flying low over the water.

Come and enjoy the excitement of a nocturnal walk in this little-known corner of the city.

Meet at the Franciscan Garden shop at 60 St. Peter’s St. Canterbury CT1 2BE.

Bring a torch for safety.

Booking is essential with a maximum of 20 participants *Tickets on sale from 1 August*
