Higham Loop via Shorne Marshes

27th July 2025

๐ŸŒฟ Marshland Loop: A Gentle Hike from Higham

๐Ÿ“ Walk Description

If youโ€™re after a peaceful day out with wide open views and barely a hill in sight, this 15.5 km circular walk from Higham might be just what youโ€™re looking for. Starting and ending near the quiet village, the route gently meanders through low-lying countryside, skimming the edge of the hauntingly beautiful Shorne Marshes. This is a walk that feels miles away from the rush of modern life. The air is still, the skies are huge, and the paths are often empty โ€” except for the odd dog walker or a curious heron wading in the reeds. Youโ€™ll follow tracks across old farmland and grazing marsh, with views stretching out across the Thames Estuary. On a clear day, you might even spot distant ships gliding silently along the water.

๐Ÿง˜ The route is flat all the way โ€” no climbs, no tricky terrain โ€” making it perfect for those who want a longer stretch without testing stamina. Itโ€™s ideal for beginner hikers, birdwatchers, or anyone craving a slower, more mindful pace. Expect to see swans, egrets, and flocks of waders darting across the sky. Thereโ€™s a timelessness to this landscape โ€” as if not much has changed here in centuries.

๐ŸŽ’ Things to bring: the marsh paths can get squelchy after rain, so waterproof boots are a good shout. Shade is in short supply, so pack a sun hat and plenty of water on a hot day. This is a walk that doesnโ€™t try too hard to impress โ€” and thatโ€™s exactly its charm. Just open skies, quiet paths, and nature doing its thing.
