CSF: The Emperor of the Moon

31st July - 2nd August 2025

Presented by Canterbury Shakespeare Festival

A farce in the Commedia dell'Arte tradition, The Emperor of the Moon tells the story of Doctor Baliardo, whose obsession with his scientific study of the moon leads him to neglect his daughter Elaria and niece Bellemante. He is tricked by his servant Scaramouch into inviting their disguised would-be lovers to the house to assist with his observations. Dons Cinthio and Charmante convince Baliardo that he can spy on a society of moon people by holding various images in front of his telescope.

Through this visual manipulation, the Dons persuade the doctor to allow their dual marriage to his daughter and niece, as they further pose as The Emperor of the Moon and the Prince of Thunderland. Through her comedy, Behn explores themes of power, gender and privacy, and also satirises the pseudo science practised in her day. Chairs will not be provided for this performance, please bring your own.

Please be aware this performance is outside, so dress for the weather! Location: Canterbury Hotel – 65/67 New Dover Rd Canterbury CT1 3DX The event is ticketed by Gulbenkian Arts Centre, but not performed there.
