Canterbury Chamber Choir presents Benjamin Britten’s dramatic cantata, St Nicolas.
Canterbury Chamber Choir presents Benjamin Britten’s dramatic cantata, St Nicolas.
The work presents legendary incidents in the life of Nicolas, patron saint of children, seamen, and travellers and the singers transform themselves into various characters during the drama, relating their adventures with the conviction of eye-witnesses, telling the story of the original ‘Father Christmas’. The Choir is delighted to be joined by singers from across East Kent including those from Thanet Chamber Choir, Pharos Chamber Choir and Sound Waves Choir from Dover as well as children from Holy Trinity School in Ramsgate, Shepherdswell Primary School and other local school children. St Nicolas is conducted by Peter Futcher and the singers are joined by a professional string orchestra, percussionists and piano.
The titular role of St Nicolas is taken on by Paul Phoenix; his long career in the music business spans five decades, from Ivor Novello Award-winning Chorister soloist at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, through seventeen years and two Grammy Awards as tenor in the world-renowned a cappella group, The King’s Singers, to his work today which includes teaching young voices at the Junior King’s School and International College in Canterbury as well as performance and consultancy around the world born out of his vast experience as a singer and performer.
