We at Visit Kent just happen to believe the countryside and the coast is the perfect place for a getaway break. With luscious green fields to explore, sunny beaches to discover and a whole load of locally produced food to taste, there's no better place for a family getaway this summer.

Deal's Pier and Beach

The beautiful sea side town of Deal is a must visit. Located just past Dover, Deal's beach is great for long evening strolls to see the sun set. While here you can explore Deal Pier which stretches out over 1000 feet! This is perfect for those sunny family days out, ice cream in hand.

With over 153 miles of countryside to explore, the Kent Downs is the perfect destination for anyone who loves hiking, walking or trails. This area stretches from the White Cliffs of Dover to the countryside of Sevenoaks. Take a short walk to stretch your legs and get back in to nature!

Margate's Shell Grotto

If you're looking for a real hidden gem to explore though, try the shell grotto in Margate. The origins of this grotto is unknown, in 1835 the grotto was discovered underneath a cottage and was opened to the public in 1838. The grotto features 4.6 million shells and is 2000 square feet of mosaic. So come and explore the 70ft of tunnels in Margate! Children are sure to be amazed by the shell grotto and will love its beautiful walls.

Ramsgate Royal Harbour

Take in the sights and sounds of a working harbour with a beautiful selection of sailing and powerboats at the UK's only Royal Harbour. King George IV granted its Royal designation in 1821 in appreciation of the town's hospitality when he embarked with the Royal Squadron from Ramsgate for Hanover.

During WWII Operation Dynamo was launched and an assortment of yachts, motor cruisers, fishing boats and other small craft assembled at Ramsgate, before crossing to Dunkirk to ferry men from the beaches to waiting ships. Sit enjoying the view at one of the many surrounding stylish bars, cafes and restaurants. The historic waterfront of Ramsgate has a lively cosmopolitan feel. Select an alfresco café, sip a drink and see the yachts bobbing in the picturesque marina - this Cinque Port is the only ‘Royal Harbour’ in the country.
