If you are planning to visit the UK from an EU country after Brexit, many of the entry requirements for EU citizens will remain the same, however there may still be some changes you will need to be aware of should the UK leave the EU without a deal. Whether you are travelling to Kent on the ferry via the Port of Dover, or via the Eurotunnel or Eurostar, be sure to check the latest advice before you travel.

Entering the UK via Kent

If you are a citizen of an EU or EEA country or Switzerland, entry requirements to the UK will not change. You will still be able to travel to the UK without a Visa, for leisure, study or business. You will also still be able to use e-passport gates if you have a biometric passport. Requirements for tourists travelling from non-EU countries will also remain the same.

If you intend to travel to the UK for longer than three months, you can check the latest advice on the Gov.uk website.

At the UK border

However you arrive to the UK, the documentation you will need to present at the UK border will not change. If you are a citizen of an EU country or Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, you will need to provide either one of the following:

  • A valid passport
  • A national identity card

If you are a citizen of another country, the documentation you require will remain the same and you will need to show a valid passport.

Driving in the UK

If you have a non-UK license, the regulations for driving in the UK will remain the same. You can find out about using your license in England via the Gov.UK website.

Should you not wish to drive, Kent is well-connected with Southeastern trains travelling throughout the county and further afield to London.

If you car is not insured in the UK, you may need to apply for an insurance ‘green card’. To find out more about the latest updates for vehicle insurance visit the Gov.UK website.

What you can bring into the UK

Regardless of whether the UK leaves the EU without a deal, there will be no changes to the hand luggage items, food or plants you may bring into the UK. However, there will be changes to how both horses and endangered plants and animals may be brought in and out of the UK. You can find the latest updates about this here.

Bringing your pet to Kent

If you are travelling from an EU country to the UK you will still be able to travel with your pet after Brexit. There will be no changes to the regulations for bringing your pet to the UK from an EU country. However, should the UK leave the EU without a deal and you are travelling to the EU with a pet from the UK, your pet may be required to have a blood test to check they have been immunized against rabies. Be sure to check the latest advice on this.

Using your mobile phone

If the UK leaves the EU with a deal, the charges for calls, texts and data in the UK will not change if your SIM card is from an EU or EEA phone network. However, if there is no deal, these charges will vary depending on your mobile network provider.
