NAO Victoria Replica Ship at Town Pier Gravesend

17th June - 28th June 2026

Replica of the last surviving Spanish vessel to complete the first circumnavigation of the world, visits Town Pier Gravesend.

The Nao Victoria is associated with the greatest adventure in the history of navigation: the first circumnavigation of the world in the 16th century (1519/1522).

On September 8th, 1522, 18 men aboard the Nao Victoria, achieved the greatest milestone in the history of navigation. After more than 3 years of suffering at sea, these men were the first to cross the great oceans and reveal the real size of the earth.

Spice Army

The expedition was made up of 5 ships and 243 crew members who, under the command of Ferdinand Magellan, left Seville in Spain on August 10, 1519. The so-called Armada de Especería (Spice Army) was financed by the Spanish crown with the aim of opening a route that, sailing to the west, would manage to reach the spice islands - the Moluccas - in present-day Indonesia. Over three years, the expedition crossed three oceans, reaching Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina to finally reach what would become known as  the Strait of Magellan.

From Indonesia, the Nao Victoria (the only surviving ship of the expedition) began its return journey, crossing the Indian Ocean and the Cape of Good Hope, skirting the African continent, and sailing for Spain. Finally, on September 8th, 1522, 18 men arrived in Seville, achieving the greatest feat of all time in the history of navigation: the First Circumnavigation Around the World.

Nao Victoria, Ambassador of the First Circumnavigation of the World:

Following the extraordinary adventure of the round-the-world voyage from 2004 to 2006, and taking the name of the ship, the Nao Victoria Foundation was established in 2006 as a non-profit organization with the aim of continuing to promote the First Circumnavigation of the Globe and Spanish maritime history through this unique and exceptional historical replica.

Since then, the Nao Victoria has been managed by the foundation, carrying out its own projects worldwide and participating in national and international events of great significance. As an Ambassador of the First Circumnavigation of the Globe, a symbol of Spanish maritime history, a floating museum, and a training ship, over the past thirteen years, the Nao Victoria has sailed thousands of miles, visited major ports throughout Spain, Europe, and the USA, and has welcomed more than 6 million visitors.
