Beast Herding Performance

24th May 2026

Trudgepig Folk Theatre present: Beast Herding

Trudgepig Folk Theatre’s lively walkabout herd of hooden beasts visits Folk Lore Kent’s Mayhem Fair, in Dane John Gardens.

Based in East Kent, Trudgepig perform variations of the region’s Hooden Horse folk custom. Their walkabout herd of snap-jawed, high-spirited hooden beasts is wrangled by characters from the hoodening tradition.

Hoodening is a unique rural folk custom found only in Kent, England, and brings a playful touch of local heritage to the event.

Following their appearance in the opening procession at midday, come and meet the hooden beasts as they roam the site, or find them stabled in the Mayhem Fair Big Top.

The event is part of Canterbury Unlocked, a city-wide celebration.
