A historical tour of Whitstable's Pubs

23rd May 2026

Join us for a relaxed and sociable walking tour through Whitstable’s historic pubs

This guided historical pub tour blends storytelling, seaside charm, and a lively social atmosphere as we explore centuries of intrigue, smuggling, and local legend hidden behind pub doors and along quiet streets. Starting from Whitstable Harbour, just a five-minute walk from Whitstable Station, this relaxed four-hour experience takes you through the heart of the town, stopping at five historic pubs where history and hospitality go hand in hand.

As we wander through Whitstable’s streets and along its shoreline, we follow in the footsteps of Romans, smugglers, and generations of locals who have shaped its unique identity. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to enjoy a drink (not included) at each stop while soaking up the atmosphere and stories that bring these places to life. The walk finishes at the sea wall outside the Whitstable Oyster Company just a short walk from our starting location.

Walk Type: Linear Ale, oysters and old tales: a historic Whitstable pub walk —

Starting from just outside Whitstable Harbour, just a five-minute walk from Whitstable Station, we’ll wander through the town and along the shoreline, visiting five carefully selected historic pubs. Each stop has been chosen for its atmosphere, character, and connection to Whitstable’s past, from traditional drinking spots shaped by the fishing trade to long-standing favourites linked to the town’s smuggling history. Along the way, you’ll hear a mix of fascinating and entertaining stories drawn from Whitstable’s past. Expect tales of Romans and smugglers, a famously polite horror actor with local ties, forgetful gangsters whose plans didn’t quite go to plan, and an Archbishop whose story ended in a particularly grim way involving bones. These stories, both light-hearted and darker in tone, help bring the town’s history vividly to life. This guided experience is designed to be easy-paced, informative, and social, with plenty of time to enjoy a drink at each stop if you choose. The route takes in both the characterful streets and the seafront, reaching the sea wall outside the Whitstable Oyster.

Perfect for those who enjoy local history, traditional pubs, and a relaxed group atmosphere, this walk offers a unique and entertaining way to experience Whitstable from a different perspective. A memorable afternoon of history, storytelling, and good company, set against the backdrop of one of Kent’s most loved coastal towns. The tour starts promptly on time.
