Creative Activities and Breaks
Be inspired and learn something new in the Garden of England. As well as discovering Kent, you could also discover a new skill - ranging from cooking and pottery, to driving a steam train and feeding a giraffe.
Learn culinary alchemy at the purpose built kitchens of the Kent Cookery School. Choose from courses including fish, game, baking and Indian and Italian cuisine - then unleash your inner Jamie or Nigella.
You could build entire weekend breaks around the one-day workshops run by Kent Adult Education, which range from website design and photography to floristry and pottery. Pick a subject and location, then check our Destinations pages to discover what else that area offers.
One-off workshops at Creek Creative in Faversham include singing, pottery and life drawing. More opportunities to escape to create can be found in numerous distinctive venues on what is becoming known as Kent’s Creative Coast. Meet local artists and work with them in their seaside studios; discover how to cast body parts in bronze; design a new space in your garden or home or even start your first novel on a creative writing retreat.
While at Brogdale, Home of the National Fruit Collection, half-day-to-whole-weekend courses cover preparing game; burning charcoal; pruning and foraging.
Steam buffs will be chuffed to bits by the experiences offered by the Kent and East Sussex Railway and the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway. Prepare to ride on the footplate, shovel coal and actually guide the engine as it puffs along the track.
For an unforgettable animal encounter, try one of the themed days at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park. Ranging from being a keeper for the day to a one-day wildlife photography course, you could be feeding, mucking out and snapping anything from giraffes to gorillas.
Or sign up for a one-to-one coaching session at the Kent County Cricket Club. Open to adults and children, they're run at indoor nets and could see you transform your game.
Kent also offers a wealth of top-class coaching for surfing, kite- and wind-surfing, kayaking and sailing - see our dedicated Water Activities page.
