Whitstable Regatta at Tankerton Slopes
Dear Friends,
Once again the Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions Club welcomes you to the 217th Anniversary of Whitstable Regatta, probably to oldest sea Regatta in Britain, the two day event is packed with fun, music, displays and even races for the children. Everything to suit all the family.
This year we have a series of seaborne events which were popular in my youth and in my grandparent’s day. On Saturday we are hoping for the boats of yester-year and on Sunday the Whitstable Yacht Club will be organising the sailing events. The Local Lifeboat Service will also be demonstrating their skills at a seaborne rescue. We must not forget the excitement of the “Pirate Attack for the children.
The Saturday finale will be at about 9.30 with the Grand Firework Display out at sea. On Sunday there will be a Flying Display from Hanger 11 World War 2 Collection Spitfire, which is the only one of its type in the world to be still flying with its original 1945 Merlin engine helping to celebrate 70 years since the Battle of Britain, sponsored by Shepherd Neame and Spitfire Bitter.
Something a little different from the depths of time, medieval history bought to life with the East Kent Historical Organisation; certainly worth a look and exciting to watch.
Throughout the two days there are a magnificent array of stalls, sideshows and all the fun of the fair. Don’t forget to bring your dog along on SUNDAY (NOT SATURDAY) for the Regatta Dog Show, Not quite Cruft’s but fun anyway. For the motoring enthusiast there will be motor bikes, customised bikes. Also displayed will be some of the latest models of cars to dream over or even test drive.
Our thanks must be extended to the many people who have made this event possible, including Canterbury City Council, Majestic Publications for the programme, Viking Fireworks, Serco, the RLNI, the Scouts, Sea Cadets Band, St John’s Ambulance, the Fire Service, Whitstable Yacht Club and Shepherd Neame but most importantly our advertisers without this programme would not be possible. Please support them so that they will continue to support us! A final special thanks must go to all the Lions, helpers and Lions Clubs that have supported and help us over the years.
Thank you for reading this and may I welcome you on behalf of Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions Club and hope that you have a wonderful weekend.
Organised by Whitstable & Herne Bay Lions Club.
