Winter Walks
Blow away the cobwebs
Wrap up warm and re-charge your batteries in the great outdoors. It's a wonderful time of year to explore, with lots of fresh air and secret wildlife sights.
Step off the train in Dover and enjoy a Heritage Coast break. The White Cliffs are your gateway to miles of ancient chalk downland trails and also the long-distance Saxon Shoreway path. Share the stunning views with sea birds and grazing ponies.
Rail stations from Herne Bay to Ramsgate will get you onto The Viking Coastal Trail, for invigorating hikes past sandy beaches and bays where Charles Dickens loved to wander. Anothergreat escape is Bewl Water (nearest station Wadhurst). Spot mallards, moorhens and other feathered friends on the 12.5-mile round-reservoir route.
Over 13 stations serve the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, stretching from The White Cliffs to the Surrey and London borders. Hop off at Wye, for instance, to ramble the North Downs Way. Valleys, woodlands and dramatic escarpments are real easy to reach.
Fun for Kids
Great value, boredom-bursting attractions
Fancy some animal magic? Experience the ‘Palace of the Apes' and other exotic adventures at Port Lympne (Ashford International Station). Share close encounters with elephants and lions at Howletts Wild Animal Park (Bekesbourne Station).
For a brush with history, head for The Canterbury Tales (Canterbury East) and gripping yarns from Chaucer's pilgrims. The exciting new Dickens World (Chatham) whisks you back to the 19thcentury. Or from February 18, revisit rural yesteryear at the Museum of Kent Life (Maidstone East/West, plus taxi or bus 155). An All-in-one ticket to Dover Castle (Dover Priory) brings centuries of drama to life.
Then ride high racing JCBs and dumpers at Diggerland (Cuxton), open weekends and school holidays. Or, check the timetables and steam off on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway (Folkestone Central). Something for everyone!
Cosy Pubs
Perfect for lazy weekend escapes
Simple pleasures are often the best and winding down in a cosy Kent pub in village or town is one of them. Leave the car behind, take the train, and then really relax over that lunchtime pint. Or stay overnight, toasting your toes by an inglenook fireplace, tucking into hearty local food - it's the perfect weekender. Pub grub and B&B can be light on the pocket, too.
Family-run Shepherd Neame, Britain's oldest brewer of award-winning ales, has characterful inns with accommodation at locations right across Kent. How about The Millers Arms at Canterbury and some sightseeing? Or laze beside the log fire in the oak-beamed Dog and Bear at Lenham. Discover the picturesque village of Chilham when you overnight at the 15th-century Woolpack Inn. They all serve seasonal Garden of England fare and Shepherd Neame's traditional Kentish ales.
Combine a stay at The Sun Inn, Faversham, with a tour and tastings at Shepherd Neame's nearby brewery. New Beer and Food Evenings are another attraction. Then take home some Spitfire, Bishops Finger or Masterbrew.
Love is in the air
Candles, fine food, pampering, romance

Kent is romantic at any time, of course. Share a Michelin-starred gourmet meal at Read's Restaurant with Rooms (Faversham station, then 5-minute taxi ride). Creekside Faversham, with its heritage and scenery, is a gem of a market town.
Or have a city break in Canterbury, full of theatre and nightlife. ABode Canterbury's Fabulous rooms are the ultimate in luxury, and a glass of bubbly in Michael Caines Champagne and Cocktail Bar is a must.
