Welcome to White Cliffs Country

Known throughout the world, the iconic White Cliffs are internationally recognised, so much so they were recently voted Britain’s most popular stretch of coastline. They have witnessed much action and invasions throughout centuries – the historic Dunkirk evacuation was even planned from within them. Today they provide a welcome sight to the millions of visitors who visit White Cliffs Country.

Explore and discover our unrivalled countryside. Feel the wind in your hair - there is a wealth of opportunities to walk and cycle from our long distance footpaths to routes developed as part of the National Cycle Network. Our wonderful chalk grassland is described as “Europe’s equivalent of a tropical rain forest” and attracts internationally important habitat to the area.

Experience our rich heritage and follow in the footsteps of some of our more famous visitors. Along with Caesar, Wellington, Nelson and Churchill, White Cliffs Country has provided inspiration for many famous writers. Just along the coast in St. Margaret’s Bay, Ian Flemming brought Noel Coward’s house and was inspired to write about 007. Jane Austen was a frequent visitor to Goodnestone Park gardens and the great William Shakespeare mentions Dover in the play King Lear.

Enjoy exciting activities and events. Our golf courses are world famous and on a number of occasions have hosted the challenging Open Golf Championship, with players like Tiger Woods and Colin Montgomery. With miles of coastline there are opportunities to experience exhilarating water sports to a spot of fishing from the beach. Take to the skies at the Channel Gliding club and admire the fantastic scenery of the famous cliffs below.

Why not stay a little longer - we have excellent quality assessed accommodation, which will appeal to all, with a wide choice of friendly ‘bed and breakfast’ establishments to beautiful country house hotels with roaring log fires.
