Glorious Gardens
Walmer Castle & Gardens
Call in at the elegant Walmer Castle and Gardens, official residence of the ‘Lords Warden of the Cinque Ports'. See where the Duke of Wellington lived and died. The spirit of Napoleons nemesis and the victor of Waterloo still lives on at this former coastal artillery fort. The ‘Iron Duke' preferred unsophisticated furnishings and the campaign-bed on which he slept - with its original horsehair mattress and bedding - remains on display as a testament to his Spartan tastes. A pair of original ‘Wellington boots' can also be seen alongside a great many personal effects in the fascinating on-site Wellington museum.
Walmer Castle and Gardens is rich with the memories of the famous residents who lived within it.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother made regular visits and stopovers here. See the rooms in which she entertained and the Queen Mother's Garden - a gift for her 95th birthday.
Take a stroll through the magnificent gardens - a delight throughout the year. Enjoy the broadwalk with its unique yew hedge as well as the moat, kitchen gardens and the woodland walk.
