Literary & Film

Kent has inspired great literature ever since Chaucer's imaginary pilgrims travelled along the Pilgrim's Way. Tread in the footsteps of the Wife of Bath or Dickens' Mr Pickwick on a literary tour shore excursion and gain insight into the different genres, periods and authors. Kent has inspired, including Jane Austen, Mary Tourtel (Rupert Bear's creator) and of course Charles Dickens.

Groombridge place

Groombridge Place, Tunbridge Wells

The 2005 film of the Jane Austen classic 'Pride and Prejudice', starring Keira Knightley was filmed within the magnificent setting of Groombridge Place, Kent.  Jane Austen's family originated from Kent and she often visited her brother Edward Knight's estate in Godmersham Park, between Ashford and Canterbury.

Dickens House Museum

Dickens Museum, Broadstairs

Dickens' love of the sea inpired many of his novels and he escapred to Broadstairs whenever he could. Once home to Miss Mary Pearson Strong, on whom Charles Dickens based Miss Betsey Trotwood in his novel David Copperfield. It is now a museum commemorating the author's association with Broadstairs.

Dover Castle

Dover Castle and Secret Wartime Tunnels Exhibition

Dramatically located on the white cliffs overlooking the sea, Dover Castle is one of western Europe's most impressive fortresses and has played a key role in many historic events. It has been the dramatic setting for many film scenes including parts of Franco Zefferelli's 'Hamlet', starring Mel Gibson. Also the Bond classic, Diamonds are Forever was also filmed in Dover. It is believed that Ian Fleming took Bond's famous 007 tag from the number of the London to Dover coach!

Canterbury Tales

The Canterbury Tales, Canterbury

A fascinating audio-visual experience in which visitors join Chaucer's pilgrims on their journey from London's Tabard Inn to Becket's Shrine at Canterbury - with Medieval tales of chivalry and romantic adventure.

Hever Castle

Hever Castle & Gardens, Edenbridge

Hever Castle, the 13th century moated castle and acres of beautiful Italian gardens, was the home of Anne Boleyn and was used for the filming of the orginal version of 'Anne of a Thousand Days' starring Richard Burton. Drive through the pretty Tudor village of Chiddingstone owned by the National Trust. This was also used in 'A Room with a View', 'Anne of a thousand days' and 'Elizabeth R'.

Emmetts garden

Emmetts Garden, Sevenoaks

Emmetts Garden is a five acre hillside garden featured in 'A Room with a View'. The garden is noted for its breathtaking views, rare trees and shrubs.

Penshurst - the other boleyn girl

Knole, Dover Castle and Penshurst Place

Kent has many Tudor connections with its stately homes and many castles. Knole, Dover Castle and Penshurst Place are the key locations for the 2008 film 'The Other Boleyn Girl'. The film is based on the best selling novel by Philippa Gregory and is the Tudor story of the relationship between Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and her sister Mary Boleyn.
