Walmer Castle and Gardens

Built during the reign of King Henry VIII, Walmer Castle is one of the most fascinating visitor attractions in the South East.

Originally designed as part of a chain of coastal artillery defences,  it became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports due to it's key position on the Kent coast

As the home of the Lord Warden, Walmer has been home to an incredible range of characters. The Duke of Wellington held the post for 23 years; see the armchair in which Wellington died and an original pair of Wellington boots!

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother also made regular visits to Walmer Castle. Visitors can stroll in her dedicated garden filled with colours and scents.

Explore magnificent gardens including the broad walk, kitchen garden and some excellent bird spotting.

Don't miss the summer garden events in June and July, and be sure to try some of the freshly grown produce from the kitchen garden in the castle's tearoom.
